DisplayPort is a relatively new standard for the digital transmission of video data. Chip manufacturers such as Intel implement DisplayPort as the new standard in their chipsets in favor of DVI and LVDS. Industrial customers prefer DisplayPort to HDMI because the plug is mechanically stable and locked. An important commercial advantage is that no royalties must be paid when using DisplayPort in designs.
